Interesting discoveries of the Chickasaw Homeland is the topic of the Union County Historical Society is set for Friday, May 18, 12 noon at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Mitch Caver, from Baldwyn, MS, is the guest speaker. He has a passion for research in discovering the history of the Chickasaw people when they lived in the Homeland here in North Mississippi. This passion has lead to a steadfast friendship with the Chickasaw Nation. Important discoveries about the Chickasaw life here are attributed to Caver’s diligent research. In 2015 he was honored with the Friend of the Chickasaw Award and he is also considered by the Chickasaw an honorary citizen.
His book Piominko: Chickasaw Leader, co authored by Caver and Thomas Cogwer, is recently published by Chickasaw Press. Filled with unrelenting intrigue, treachery and uncertainty in the time of the American Revolution, both the American and the English were courting the Chickasaw leaders for help in their efforts in this war.
Piominko, one of those leaders who was working toward survival of the Chickasaw people, met with President George Washington in Philadelphia, a meeting recorded by future president John Quincy Adams, This conclave helped forge a relationship between the United States and the Chickasaw Nation.
Piominko: Chickasaw Leader tells the story of this man whose unwavering courage and intelligence in the face of monumental challenges proved crucial to the survival of two nations – the Chickasaw and the United States.
The story of Piominko is only a portion of the vast amount of research undertaken by Caver. His diligent work in this has led to other discoveries as well.
