Jennie Stephens Smith Library News: June & July 2017

Library news

This month there is big news at the library. New LED lighting has been installed. The Union County Library Board used some of the funds from the Elaine Platek inheritance, and the Union County Board of Supervisors paid for the installation. We appreciate the work of Tim McCraw and his crew from T and M Electrical for the job he did on the installation.

The Jennie Stephens Smith Library has been a busy place this summer with 6812 visits in June and July. 54 new library cards were issued for New Albany residents, and 59 new library cards were issued for Union County residents. The summer reading program was a big success. Friends of the Library was able to help with the reading program this year because of donations received from its members. We have received memorials for Beulah Hawthorne who was a faithful lifetime member of Friends of the Library.

Amazon Smiles has also sent donations because of the people registering for the Jennie Stephens Smith Library to be the charity that receives a percentage of their Amazon purchases. To help the library in this way sign up for Amazon Smiles on the Amazon website and select the Jennie Stephens Smith Library for your charity. Then when Amazon purchases are made, do it through Amazon Smiles.

With a new school year beginning remember the library has free WiFi for the IPads. The computers and databases are available for research for school projects. There are also AR books available for the students to check out, and the Book Nook has some AR books available for purchase for a nominal fee.

The Genealogy Room has some new rules. The library has materials available for everyone to do genealogical research and Union County research at the library. There have been copies of some Union County historical information and family history information of Union County pioneer families that had been donated to the Jennie Stephens Library Genealogy Room that has been removed from the library. Now a library employee will have to be in the room when anyone is doing research in the Genealogy Room.
