Norman Von Hill
March 26, 1929 – June 17, 2018
Norman Von Hill, 89, a lifelong resident of Union County left his earthly home on Father’s Day, June 17, 2018 at Baptist Memorial Hospital- Union County.
A celebration of life service will be Wednesday, June 20, 2018 at the United Funeral Home Chapel with his two grandsons, Reverend John Hugh Tate and Pastor Joshua Tate officiating. Visitation will be before the service and Tuesday June 19 from 5:00 to 8:00 at United Funeral Home. Internment will be at Hopewell Cemetery with the Mississippi Department of Wildlife and Fisheries honor guard.
Mr. Hill was born on March 26, 1929 to the late Eugene and Maude Foreman Hill. He graduated from Center High School in 1949 and following graduation, he served his country in the Korean War with the United States Army. After returning home, he married Doris Marie Bell, who preceded him in death.
He was employed by Futorian Corporation and Mississippi Highway Department for twenty years. In 1973 he began work for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks as a game and fish warden until he retired in 1994.
Until this past year when his health declined, he was a faithful member of Calvary United Methodist Church, being very active in the Men’s Club. He especially enjoyed participating and fellowshipping with their Bar-B-Ques and other church activities. His volunteer work especially Meals on Wheels, brought him much joy.
On December 1, 2018 he would have celebrated forty years of marriage to Frances Stroud Hill. They blended their families together with love and celebrated becoming grandparents together, traveling, attending basketball games throughout the SEC conference, gardening and spirited musical events until they became home-bound.
He will be remembered by all for his love of family, friends and his generosity. His outgoing personality was contagious, especially his humorous stories, jokes, and pranks he enjoyed sharing with all.
These family members left to cherish and honor his memory include his wife Frances, Terry Vaughn Hill (Tammie), Sara Marie Hill Melson (Rick), Diane Stroud Tate (Hugh), John Busby Stroud (Billye Jean). Nine grandchildren, Toby Hill, Tyler Hill (Andi Beth), Tony Hill (Shauna), Joni Melson, Anna Claire Melson Robinson (Kevin), John Hugh Tate (Linda), Joshua Tate (Allison), Caroline Stroud, Anna Frances Stroud, and nine great-grandchildren with his name sake, baby James Norman Tate arriving in August.
Serving as pallbearers will be Toby Hill, Tyler Hill, Tony Hill, Richard Hill, Reverend Ronnie Goodwin, Bob Conwill, Paul Hall and Benny Little.
Honorary pallbearers will be Billy Don Bevill, Charles Hall, Reuben Beaty and retired MDWF game wardens.
Besides his parents and his first wife, Mr. Hill was preceded in death by seven brothers, Neil, Earle, Floy, Jamie, Roy, Paul and Glenn Hill.
The United States Army flag will be flown in honor of Mr. Hill’s service to his country during visitation and the funeral.
